The pancake diary

In anticipation of my Fiji blog, here is a special post about my favorite food. If there was one thing I had not expected from this trip it would have been eating a lot of pancakes. Sometimes even eating pancakes on a daily basis. Well you know what they say, a pancake a day keeps the doctor away.
I have listed the ones that were in some way or another different or special for the location, moment or taste.

The roti pancake
Taste: ***** (5/5)
Specialness: **** (4/5)
Siem Reap, Cambodia
Chiang Mai, Thailand

Little dough balls are made round by the seller in an interesting way. Then backed on a warm round pan with lots of oil. Filling can be anything but best with egg and banana, topped with cream. This is street-food.

The pancake in the dessert cafe
Taste: **** (4/5)
Specialness: *** (3/5)
Phuket, Thailand

A cafe serving only desserts. I had to try their French style pancake with mango.

The pancake place
Taste: ** (2/5)
Specialness: *** (3/5)
Phuket, Thailand

I can’t be expected to walk by a pancake restaurant and not go in. So I had American pancakes for breakfast with ice. They should really up their game.

The technology pancake
Taste: **** (4/5)
Specialness: ***** (5/5)
Mall, Chiang Mai, Thailand

A 2D printed pancake of my own face. An artist working together with a machine. Beautifully made and just 5 euro and super tasty with fresh mango. A pancake lovers dream, or not?

The banana pancakes from Yo
Taste: ***** (5/5)
Specialness: ****** (6/5)
Journey to Freedom, Thailand

Every morning was an instant feast with the banana pancakes made by Yo. Best when topped with honey or peanut butter. This week I value so much and I will hold this memory so dearly, that’s why the pancakes have an exceptional high score, and the taste was of course good.

The Thai crispy pancake
Taste: * (1/5)
Specialness: *** (3/5)
Bangkok, Thailand

Small rounds that are baked and dried. Filled with something creamy. They don’t do their name just.

The good view pancake
Taste: *** (3/5)
Specialness: **** (4/5)
Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Waking up in the quiet waters of Ha Long Bay. And getting a stack of pancakes for breakfast. I learned from my Indian friends that I should not count my food so let’s just say I ate a lot.

The Vietnamese stuffed pancake
Taste: *** (3/5)
Specialness: **** (4/5)
Dong Van, Vietnam

The batter is made with rice flower. A linen sheet covers a steaming pot on which the pancake is made. Generally filled with a mixture of pork or mushrooms. The pancake is cut and put in a beef stock soup.

The unexpected pancake
Taste: *** (3/5)
Specialness: ** (2/5)
Pho hostel, Hanoi, Vietnam

I always order pancakes when available for breakfast but this particular day I wanted an omelet for a change. My order was incorrectly taken and I ended up getting a pancake.

The fried banana pancake
Taste: **** (4/5)
Specialness: **** (4/5)
Hoi An, Vietnam

A lot of things are fried in Asia and apparently that includes a banana pancake.

The chopsticks pancake
Taste: ***** (5/5)
Specialness: **** (4/5)
Street food hall, HCMC, Vietnam

After not having had a pancake for over a week I was craving for one. But it had to be special. I found a Korean seafood pancake with vegetables in it. Very tasty and the first pancake I ate with chopsticks.

The morning pancake
Taste: **** (4/5)
Specialness: ***(3/5)
El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

Finally my first pancake in the Philippines. In the Spin Designer hostel there is an omelet station where the guy is making non stop pancakes. They are fluffy American pancakes with fresh fruit and syrup. I had seconds and thirds sometimes fourths. I really really enjoyed it for four mornings.

The last one
Taste: ***(3/5)
Specialness: **(2/5)
El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

This is also a goodbye pancake. It was the standard crepe station with Nutella and banana, a little bit too dry though. But it happened to be the last moment with Jaytu and Tommy after a day out on the water as I didn’t make it for dinner that night.

It was supposed to be only Asia but then Sydney came with a good one.

The Sydney pancake
Taste: **** (4/5)
Specialness: ** (2/5)
The Rocks, Sydney, Australia

An exceptionally expensive but tasty banana pancake with fresh fruit and yogurt. Enjoyed with a green juice and my e-reader.

And then in NZ another one..

The Chinese crepe (Jian Bing)
Taste: *** (3/5)
Specialness: *** (3/5)
Sunday market, Wellington, New Zealand

A mixture of flour and eggs is spread out on a hot round plate. Sesame seeds, Chinese sauce, vegetables and a crisp are added and you have your pancake. The taste is good when hot and makes for a perfect lunch.

And even Fiji did not disappoint.

Small breakfast pancakes
Taste: **** (4/5)
Specialness: ***** (5/5)
Navutu Stars, Yaqeta Island, Fiji

One of the breakfast options was mini pancakes. I ordered them daily. Tasty and small, looking a lot like the Dutch poffertjes.

Well, these were the pancake highlights of my trip.
